Having a distinctive almond shaped skull with characteristic stalk-like projection resembling a pear and giving these helmets their name cabacette. Many of these were held in English church armouries from the time of the Armada, and examples were taken to the New World by the earliest English settlers, one has been found during excavations at Jamestown Island. This is a pleasing example, the rosettes and plume holder being restorations. In all a handsome example of munition armour of the late 16th Century. In addition to being a being a famous writer, Scott was also an antiquary who assembled an important collection of arms and armour. He was a contemporary and correspondant of Samuel Rush Meyrick, and indeed commissioned him to procure items for his armoury. The armoury is on public display at Abbotsford and is to be recommended to the student of arms and armour. The gauntlet dates to the late 16th Century and is of steel decorated with brass-capped rivets.

Clan membership[ edit ] The word clan is derived from the Gaelic word clanna, meaning children. Learney considered clans to be a “noble incorporation” because the arms borne by a clan chief are granted or otherwise recognised by the Lord Lyon as an officer of the Crown, thus conferring royal recognition to the entire clan. Clans with recognised chiefs are therefore considered a noble community under Scots law.
A group without a chief recognised by the Sovereign, through the Lord Lyon, has no official standing under Scottish law. Claimants to the title of chief are expected to be recognised by the Lord Lyon as the rightful heir to the undifferenced arms of the ancestor of the clan of which the claimant seeks to be recognized as chief. A chief of a clan is the only person who is entitled to bear the undifferenced arms of the ancestral founder of the clan.

Diagram B, the weft Diagram C, the tartan. The combining of the warp and weft. Each thread in the warp crosses each thread in the weft at right angles. Where a thread in the warp crosses a thread of the same colour in the weft they produce a solid colour on the tartan, while a thread crossing another of a different colour produces an equal mixture of the two colours.
Thus, a set of two base colours produces three different colours including one mixture. The total number of colours, including mixtures, increases quadratically with the number of base colours so a sett of six base colours produces fifteen mixtures and a total of twenty-one different colours. This means that the more stripes and colours used, the more blurred and subdued the tartan’s pattern becomes. In diagram A, the sett reverses at the first pivot, then repeats, then reverses at the next pivot, and will carry on in this manner horizontally.
In diagram B, the sett reverses and repeats in the same way as the warp, and also carries on in the same manner vertically. The diagrams left illustrate the construction of a “symmetrical” tartan.

She has figured out that treats are forthcoming as a reward for a stopping barking at nothing and b stopping washing the other dogs faces. QED she does both of those things all of the time and is not underfed. She also figures that a tummy rub is a joy and a privilege she bestows upon her owners and therefore she also needs to be rewarded for the time she spends lying down blissed out and snoring. Locating the Serial Number – Chicago built Schwinn serial numbers are found on the left rear axle-hanger or fork-end on the frame. If letters were used for date codes, they skipped the letters “I” and “O” as they looked too much like numbers. This scheme is for all Chicago built non-Paramount models excluding Superiors and Super Sports whose serial numbers are located on the left rear axle hanger and consist of a single letter code for the month [again, skip"I” and"O”], the last digit of the year and a 3-digit sequential build number — e.

Sheffield Plate is a cheaper substitute for sterling, produced by fusing sheets of silver to the top and bottom of a sheet of copper or base metal. This ‘silver sandwich’ was then worked into finished pieces. At first it was only put on one side and later was on top and bottom. Modern electroplating was invented by Italian chemist Luigi V. Brugnatelli used his colleague Alessandro Volta’s invention of five years earlier, the voltaic pile, to facilitate the first electrodeposition.
Unfortunately, Brugnatelli’s inventions were repressed by the French Academy of Sciences and did not become used in general industry for the following thirty years. Silver plate or electroplate is formed when a thin layer of pure or sterling silver is deposited electrolytically on the surface of a base metal. By , scientists in Britain and Russia had independently devised metal deposition processes similar to Brugnatelli’s for the copper electroplating of printing press plates.
Soon after, John Wright of Birmingham, England, discovered that potassium cyanide was a suitable electrolyte for gold and silver electroplating. Wright’s associates, George Elkington and Henry Elkington were awarded the first patents for electroplating in These two then founded the electroplating industry in Birmingham England from where it spread around the world.

Founded in , the AA has grown from a pioneering automobile club to an organisation that offers motoring advice, insurance , finance, maps and travel guides. It’s regarded as the leading advocate for New Zealand motorists and their interests. How it all began In early May , Dr George Thomas Humphrey de Clive Lowe posted a letter to approximately 20 motoring enthusiasts, asking if they would be interested in starting an automobile club.
A couple of weeks later, on 26 May , Dr de Clive Lowe and six others met to discuss a proposal and by the end of the evening they had formed the Auckland Automobile Association AAA. Following closely behind in was Nelson, and in Otago and Wellington associations were formed. By there were at least 15 associations: The inauguration of an association, or club, was celebrated with a ‘run’.
The CAA was the first to introduce motor racing, organising ‘the great automobile gymkhana’ on Boxing Day at Addington. The automobile associations pioneered the concept of the New Zealand driver’s licence. However, from local bodies began issuing the licences. The associations adopted a lobbying role very early on – the two major issues of concern to them being road improvement and the tax burden on motorists. The AAA launched the first campaign ‘Better Roads’ in and over the following two decades the campaign consumed much of it resources.
Signposts One of the earliest functions of the associations was signposting. In the AAA began voluntarily marking routes, however, by there was a recognised need for someone to formally take on the role to improve signage and provide information on road conditions.
