And he was no doubt right about that. I was certainly curious about the answer to that question, so I clicked on the link. And as I did so, I also thought, “How refreshing–a journalist who actually cares about writing stuff that people want to read. Maybe we should hire him. The column was indeed titled “Why Teachers Have Sex With Their Students” or something close , but then in the first sentence the writer announced that the column was not actually about that topic at all–that he had just titled it that because he thought that would make people read it.
And then he went off on one of those snooty sermons about how pedestrian and base Internet readers are for clicking on stories about topics like “Why Teachers Have Sex With Their Students. But, still, hoping to learn why teachers have sex with their students I’m a parent, and as much as I never even want to contemplate this topic, I also don’t want to be in denial about it , I pressed on until the end.
Only to find that the bastard didn’t even answer the question! So I had to answer the question myself. According to the first couple of articles no, this was not exhaustive research , here are some common reasons teachers have sex with their students: In perhaps the most famous case of a teacher having sex and kids with her student, year-old wife and mother Mary Kay Letourneau was thrown in the slammer for the “child rape” of a year old student named Vili Fualaau.
Letourneau was let out after 6 months, whereupon she was found in a car having sex with Vili again. Letourneau was sent back to prison for many years. When she got out, she married Vili, with whom, by that point, she had had two kids.

The Rules Revisited I’ve dated countless women and it has always amazed me how little they know about men. If nothing else, this blog is an outlet for voicing my astonishment at the typical female’s ignorance of the male mindset. At most, it is a reliable source of advice for women who want to improve their chances with the opposite sex.
Social media and text messages have blurred the lines between students’ school lives and private lives. While most schools take clear steps to protect students at school, more schools are beginning to consider the need to set policies that apply to students’ activities outside of school.
When it comes to questionable online activities like cyberbullying and sexting, kids sometimes feel pressured to follow the crowd. Teachers can play a crucial role in setting high expectations for online behavior. Schools can open conversations about online safety so that students learn to set personal boundaries and feel more comfortable reporting incidents like bullying and harassment. Image via Flickr by Brad Flickinger. Privacy Since the birth of the Internet, adults have been worried about kids sharing too much online.
The fears are varied — and valid. Kids can open themselves to identity theft by offering up passwords, birthdays, and other personal data to complete strangers. Likewise, the same information can make them vulnerable to sexual predators. Students fail to consider how the things they post online can haunt them years down the line. On the plus side, teens are becoming increasingly aware of the need to protect themselves online.
Another Pew survey found that 70 percent of teens had sought advice about how to manage their privacy online. Younger teens were more likely to seek help from a parent or teacher.
Start with a candid conversation. Talk with your parents about how you will be helping them to meet their needs. Unless they are severely incapacitated, they should continue to make their own decisions and remain a central part of all discussions about their care. Encourage them to articulate their concerns: Most likely, your parents are worried about becoming a burden and losing control of their lives. Have an open conversation about what role your parents want you to play.

The parent questionnaires asked if either parent or any other family members had participated in IQ testing or had ever been identified as gifted. Responses to these questions were sparse; few of the parents had undergone evaluation as children, and of those who had, only a handful knew the results of testing.
Although identification for classes for the gifted was rare, other indications of giftedness included skipping grades in school, placement in accelerated classes or advanced tracks, MENSA eligibility, Math SAT scores, high Army Alpha scores, and being named valedictorian of their high school graduating class. Is your child is being bullied? You are not alone! Kidpower hears countless stories from upset parents whose children from toddlers to teenagers have been victimized by harassment and bullying at school. As parents, we are ultimately the ones who make the decisions about how our children get an education. Because our kids usually have no choice about where they go to school, they need our support when things go wrong. Coaching a child to set boundaries. Realistic Expectations As parents, we expect schools to provide an environment that is emotionally and physically safe for their students.
When parents notify school officials that their child is being bullied, they expect that teachers and principals will listen with compassion and do something right away to fix the problem. Most schools are doing a valiant job of trying to meet an overwhelming array of conflicting demands with very limited resources. However, many teachers, playground supervisors, and administrators lack training, support, and resources for taking effective action when problems arise.
Protective parents often need to take leadership if their own child is being bullied or if they see a child making others miserable at school. Prevention Starts With Awareness When possible, try to find out about problems when they are still small. If someone is bothering you at school, if you see someone picking on another kid, if kids are leaving another kid out — or if you are having trouble acting safely and respectfully yourself — your job is to tell me so that we can figure out what to do to make things better.
